I think it is a great thing. The Price drop is for people who want to buy a new PS2 that never got to experience it,or people who want to buy a new PS2 after they found out there PS3's don't play any PS2 titles. The Price drop was a great idea in my opinion.PS2's useless price drop
My Playstation 2 that I got at launch (almost 9 years ago!) has just started to get Disc Read Errors. I'll probably pick up a backup slim PS2 just in case this one totally fails on me. Plus, Sony has completely dropped backwards compatability for PS2 games on the newer Playstation 3s, so the lowered price for the PS2 is pretty awesome imo.
ive got 2 ps2's now. my original stopped reading older disks so i got a newer back up for cheap. ive actually been thinking about getting a new slim one to save a bit of room. i think its a great idea, not everyone is all about the latest and greatest and are just looking ofr an excuse to get one. case in point is my manager was rocking his n64 until just recently when he got his first newer gen console, the slim ps2, and loves it. and this guy is hardly a casual gamer, he just likes the idea of old games.
This price drop was nowhere near useless. We are in a recession if you haven't noticed, and cheap consoles with strong libraries will still sell well when people have less money. Also, a few third party publishers said that in order for them to continue to produce games for the ps2 they wanted a price cut. It's in a few articles somewhere, don't feel like finding them, but this price cut is NOWHERE near usless.
Looking at it from both a consumer and business angle, this is nothing short of brilliance.Face the facts....as stated before, we're in a recession period. Lots of folks (including myself) do not have thousands to throw around on a console that few third-party developers (right now) are supporting. Lots of folks' console selection is based on the kinds of games they enjoy, or if the console is going to be enjoyed by the family as a whole, not just an individual person.Related to developers, they won't start pumping out more stuff for the Ps3 until Sony not only drops the consumer price, but ALSO the price of their SDK, and also in general, the price of BluRay needs to deflate. Unless you have a 1080p HDTV (better models still being a few thousand bucks), BluRay is not going to look much (not at all?) different than regular DVD image quality. While lots of folks have a digital TV, it's just so to get digital broadcast signals....NOT for 1080p-quality picture and playing games. That's not to say those folks WON'T play games on said TV, but they'll more than likely spring for the cheaper PS2, XBox 360 or Wii.Lack of PS2 compatability (due to the feature having SO many problems which I've read about (ie: some very significant titles not working, messed up graphics, no sound, etc), not just to cut costs down) is another factor in keeping the PS2 around a while longer.Let's not forget the immense library of PSX and PS2 titles out there.Like others here, eventually my PS2 ...yes, even the slim ones put out a few years ago prior to the current 90000 series ones, will buy the farm. (aside: The one above me whose PS2 lasted all of 9 years before getting DREs....wow, not bad!) I can't justify shelling out up to $499 (for the top model) of a console in which none of my PS2 games will work on it, period. I'd much rather throw down $99 (US) so I can keep enjoying the games I've acquired.Just my .02 cents.
heck, I'd buy one if I had no other consoles/games, and wanted high quality, reasonably priced gaming.
1. PS3 doesn't have backwards compatibility
2. The old model of the PS2 had major hardware problems.
3. Many people own PS2 games and want to play them.
4. The PS2 is dirt cheap to produce and can help Sony make back some of the money they lost on the PS3.
Ps2 still has the best single player gaming experience. $100 for a PS2 = best bang for your buck. I still have my slim that I owned from 2005 %26 am currently playing FF12 since I sent my 360 for repairs.
I thought sony wants to drop the PS3 price, but the PS2 price will drop first. Since the PS3 got its popular, the PS2 will no longer on sale for few next years, maybe 2012-2013 because Sony wants to emptying the PS2 stocks. That's why sony do that on PS2, not PS3.
I'm probably gonna get another one in the near future, plus if you think ''everyone owns one'', why would they sell at a higher price?
I think its great. I'm still using my launch PS2, so incase it breaks down, I know I get another at a cheap price ;)
i'm gonna get another playstation 2 for SLI or crossfire configuration!
It was a good thing, but not an amazing price drop.
How can a price drop possibly be a bad thing?
I'm probably gonna get another one in the near future, plus if you think ''everyone owns one'', why would they sell at a higher price?
I didn't say that EVERYONE owns one, I said most people own a console of the PS2's generation. For example: Me. As I said before, I own an Xbox.
It was useless for me since my girlfriends sister gave me a silver PS2 slim for free, plus rockband (which I can't stand) a few days ago
I'm in the perfect situation for this. I had 360 until Dec. of last year. It was acting like it was ready to go (red lights?) but it still worked, so I traded it in to Gamestop for games for a PSP I had just bought for $50 (GoW PSP included GoW, Tomb Raider and Fight Night). Well, in Jan. my local RAC had a deal where you could rent a PS3 for a month free. So I did that and after the 1st month, it was $40 wkly. Well, last night I got to thinking about how I've suddenly fallen behind on my bills, the economy and my family (wife, 2 kids) and I decided to take the PS3 back to RAC and trade in the PS3 games that I've bought since then. GH: Metallica, GH: World Tour, Burnout Paradise, Time Crisis 4, Full Auto 2, 2 guitars and an extra remote I bought. I dunno exactly how much I'll get for all this, but I'm thinking it'll be plenty to get a PS2 (thanks to that price drop, $99) and a few games. This way, I'll have SOMETHING to do in my spare time while I save up $ to BUY MY OWN PS3 in a few months.
