What is the Playstation 2 like?

The only gaming systems I've ever owned are the Atari, NES, Wii, and pretty much every Nintendo handheld. Now that the PS2 is so cheap, I'm considering buying one, because I've heard great things about it. I've also heard that it has a lot of good RPGs which is a plus. I don't really care that the system is considered old, just that it has good games. I do have some questions though, like are the majority of games in 3D? I'm more comfortable with 2D, but I do like 3D as well. Are there any side-scrolling games? Can the PS2 connect to a high-def television? Any advice for me, someone who has been born and raised with Nintendo? What should I consider/know about the PS2 before making a decision? What is the Playstation 2 like?
you can't go wrong. i grew up on nes, snes, n64 etc. the ps2 has a ton of good games of all kinds. yes there are side scrollers, im not sure what type you meant however (2d side scrolling shooters? they have those for sure, r-type and gradius on top of many others) it looks fine on a HDtv but you need to get component cables, not the packed in a/v cables.the only thing i would really advise considering is knowing that you should get your games for it now while they're still around. in a year or 2 its gonna be hard to find them (kinda like ps1 games right now)What is the Playstation 2 like?
The PlayStation2 is like an orgasm. ;]Really though, it's just amazing. My favorite consol, ever. Yes, it does have a lot of RPGs, a huge selection actually, but as far as I know the majority of the games are 3D. I've never played a 2D PS2 game, but I think there are some out there.Since it's so cheap, you should just get it. Trust me, everything PS2 is amazing.
The majority of the games are 3D (like 95% maybe). The graphics can be pretty ''decent'' if you try the big titles. There are a lot of really good exclusive games on the ps2 that makes it worth a purchase in my opinion.

Side-scrollers? Ehm, only good 2D game that comes to mind is Viewtiful Joe, that's an action side-scroller... there's also King Of Fighters but that's a fighting game :P Thing is that if you have a Wii then you can just buy the Gamecube version of Viewtiful Joe instead and play it without buying the PS2.

Some HD TVs don't support RGB scart (which is what you usually get with a PS2 package) so you might be forced to buy a component cable for the ps2 for 12 bucks.
Just wait a few months and Sony will slash the PS3 cost too. Buy that, play PS2 and PS3 games, plus get a Blu Ray player.

Except that they don't sell the PS3 with backwards compatibility anymore.
Klonoa 2 was a pretty good side scroller. The ps2 has a wicked library of games.
It's like a banana milkshake. Pure awesome
I got a PS2 right after i got my very dissapointing Gamecube. i swear the only thing i liked on gamecube was the resident evils, the remakes of sonic 3d games and windwaker. But when i got a PS2 with great games like Dragonball Z:Budokai and Sonic Heroes all bets were off. A couple years later i picked up great years like Dragonball Z:Budokai 2 and much others that year in 2004 i played my first GTA:San Andreas and man that was friggin awsome. IN 2005 I was STILL buying stuff for it like God of war and Mortal Combat and also Budokai 3 a year later i also was overhyped for God of war 2 the year after it and wow IT WAS AWSOME! i have exactly 113 on my PS2, and still getting more! Trust me its definatly worth the buy!
I think it's a DEADLY system, but I never liked many of the games everyone liked for it(Okami, God Of War and Shadow Of The Colossus, I'm looking at you. I'm not an ''art'' person...=P But Resident Evil 4 was great)...I liked the games nobody liked, like Dynasty Warriors 4 and Armored Core 2...call me crazy. XD But yeah, you should prolly get it if you can, lots of fun to be had.

Yeah, it's an exclusive. XD Everyone seems to like it but me. The game doesn't tell you anything starting off, so you have to find your way around yourself, and the Colossi are WAY too hard IMO(None of my friends could beat the first one, and I never got it below half of its life gauge...)...but it's got nice graphics, I guess...not much else I liked about it. XD But it's all up to you.
The PS2 is a fantastic system with a massive library of games. There should be no shortage of gaming if you get a PS2. It's arguably the best system ever released beause of the sheer amount of excellent games that are available.
I agree - you can not go wrong with a PS2 - I have the PS3 but still play my PS2 quite a bit.not only does it have a huge library with some really good games they are still making new ones.:wink:if you are an anime fan - a game like Oni will remind you of Ghost in the Shell.Ico is another that is a one of a kind game i highly recommend. and adventure with overtones of romance.Gun is a rootin' tootin' wild west adventure with some side quests that are great fun.All the Silent Hill games are fantastic if you are a horror fan. The PS2 game Silent Hill2 is still my all time fave.

The Playstation 2, with its backwards-compatibility with PS1 games, is the best gaming console ever created. Period. My personal all-time favorite is the N64 or Dreamcast, but when you look at the titles and the features, PS2 takes the cake easily.
The PS2 is an amazing console period.
the PS2 is awesomeit has loads of incredible games from practically every genre, side scrollers..... Im not sure, but there are platformers like Jak%26Daxter that are amazing gamesplus its backwards compatible with all PS1 games.... which has more 2D games, but again lots of amazing games for the PS1 as well.to be honest its legendary and other replies will prove me right

I'm not the biggest Sony supporter out there, but the truth is that the PS2 is probably the best general console ever. Yes, other consoles have better games here and there. But when you look at the price and the amount of quality games, you can't deny how great the PS2 is. There are tons of good games accross all genres. Throw in full PS1 backwards compatibility, and you won't need another conaole for years.
