In your situation, it makes sense to buy an Xbox because if you're going to end up with a PS3 anyways, then you could always buy PS2 games later on - just make sure you buy a backwards compatible PS3!PS2 is clearly the best option....or is ...
I am an XBOX user, and the points you made have some validity, but the PS2 is still your better option. XBOX stuff is getting scarce and if you have an issue or do not like something your stuck. Also, unless you are like me and willing to learn how to clean them yourselves, most used XBOX's are destined to reach the ''not reading Discs'' problem quick. I bought a used XBOX right before christmas and I already had to fix it by january, its a lot of responsibility.

Thanks to the both of you for your feedback.

I've had my Xbox since 2003 and I haven't once had a problem with it.
I hadn't played it in the past six months and I picked it back up again three days ago, and it's still working great.

They do not break, they just get dirty and the way they were designed the normal way of cleaning a lens does not work, and you have to do it manually. Only thing I hated about the last gen really.

A lot of good points here. I can't personally attest to the dependability of used consoles, but the games and accessories are becoming more scarce, and this is one of the largest potential problems with just now entering the Xbox area.
However, it is a great console with a lot od good games and exclusives.

Its just becoming an owner now requires some commitment because unlike the PS2 you are not going to get any support, unless its from the small niche of us out here that are still kepping the system alive. Its a bigger decision I guess is all I am saying.

Unfortunately, yes. I think Microsoft really screwed itself with the way it dropped the console. There was a lot more they could have done with it. Not all of us can afford to make the jump to current-gen every time it updates, and repairing the old consoles should still be a viable option.
I wouldn't buy a PS3 with the idea that PS2 games are it's primary source of games. You're better off just buying a PS2. Why put wear and tear on a 500 dollar system when you can do it on a 99 dollar + 20 dollar memory card... one?
Not to mention that the compatiblity is much better on the PS2 than the more recent software Backward Compatiblilty versions of the PS3. Besides, the older hardware BC PS3 are either impossible to buy, or sell at an extremely high price point from Ebay sellers, anyway.
It's definietely worth it to buy a PS2, it's not a dead console and Sony keeps releasing quality games for it. For $100 bucks you can essentially play stuff like the new MLB 09 game, which is EXACTLY like it is on PS3 (minus graphics). If you're not set up for HD as it is, and are concerned about money, then absolutely get a PS2.
I got $130 for the stuff I traded in and got the PS2 for $99, and the following games: Batman Begins (Never played it before, I'm a huge Batman fan, its a surprisingly good game so far), Black (beat this one years ago, glad to go through it again though), Shadow of the Colossus (never played it, glad to have it), Mortal Kombat Armageddon (had it once before, got it for variety and 60 plus fighters), God of War 2 (beat it twice when it first came out, ready to beat it some more), Test Drive Eve of Destruction (Had it before too, I've missed this one, a very good derby style game), and Twisted Metal Black (I remember getting this back in the day on it's release, best of the series). All of this and a used memory card came out to around $150-$170 can't remember exactly, I paid $50 out of pocket I know that much. Not to bad I guess. I decided not to get an Xbox cuz I didn't want to have to wait how ever many days to have one shipped. Thanks everyone.

agree , ps2 in my opinion would be beter of the two but if money realy is an issue xbox is still good
There shouldnt be much thought involved in your situation. Ps2 remains to be the system with the best games and at the same time possessing the most diverse library of them all. I had nothing but great times with this system and dont even get me started on the PS1.
I currently still only on a ps2 and a wii. No next gen for me till maybe FF 13 but yeah.
