For what it matters: I have a Timex watch that is 20 years old and still works.
Now, if you have a PS3 or 360, Sega has a compilation disc that has 40 genesis games on it. These games include Phantasy Star 2, 3 %26 4. The first game is unlockable.question about Phantasy Star

while that is a good compilation. its different then owning the original cartridge, sounds crazy I know, but I think playing the game in cartridge form is more authentic
If the save function doesn't work, all you have to do is change the CR2032 lithium battery.
If it helps, I still have saves on my original cartridges from the early 90's (well, in Phantasy Star 2's case...)May as well start with 1 (or 2 if you don't have a Master System)
Save states eliminate that problem. If you have the time, it is really cool to play 1 through 4 in order, 4 is the best IMO, but it isn't quite as cool if you haven't played all the others.
You have to get all 3 if you can (or all 4 if you have a master system or a master system converter for number 1) and play them in order. The stories are all connected, they are all awesome and have enough of their own merits to make each of them worth playing.

Apologies, I didn't mean the actual stories within the games I meant that they are all connected through being the same 'universe' at different points in history.

[/QUOTE]Well, we agree that all Phantasy Star games are definitively worth to play. And Phantsy Star: The End of the Millennium isn't really as rewarding if you haven't played the first two entries. Unfortunately the gameplay in Phantasy Star I%26II is too archaic for nowadays standards, and it's very likely to discourage a lot of players. There's just too many grinding involved and unforgiving complex dungeons, with not much story development or something else in between. This wasn't really a particular flaw of the games though, it's just how RPG were in those days. That was the genre standard. So unless you play them in the Mega Drive Collection for the PS2 where from what I understand you're allowed to save in between, they can be a real chore to play, and you will need a lot of time in your hands.
Phantasy Star II is my favourite entry in the series, as there was nothing else that could compare to it when it released. It was quite simply the biggest and most epic RPG of it's time. But now I found it very hard to play and just worth the play to reminisce or anything. I would advise the remakes for the Playstation 2 instead for anyone with access to play Japanese imports.

There are references in Phantasy Star IV to PS III, but PS3 is sort of a Gaiden or side story to the Phantasy Star RPG storyline. I thought PS3 wasn't as bad as people said despite the big changes made.
