In Japan the series is known as Seiken Densetsu, and Secret of Mana is the 2nd game. The first game was on Game Boy, and was released in the US as Final Fantasy Adventure. This game was later remade on GBA as Sword of Mana. The third game is exclusive to Japan on Super Famicom.
Those are considered to be the main games in the series, and the numbering gets a bit weird from there. The next game that they made was Legend of Mana on PS1, but it wasn't considered to be a main title. The series had a bit of rebirth a few years ago, with Dawn of Mana on PS2 (Seiken Densetsu 4 in Japan) and Children of Mana and Heroes of Mana on DS, but these last three weren't that good. There's also a mobile phone game in Japan.
Generally, the first three are considered to be the gems, especially Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3. The original version of the first game feels like a hybrid between Zelda and Final Fantasy, but Sword of Mana implements enough from future games to feel more like a ''Mana'' game... though personally I liked the original better. How does the Mana series go?

Seiken Densetsu 3(aka Secret Of Mana 2) is even better than the original altought it never went out of Japan but you can easily find it in english on the web.
